Album Review 1: Obscured by Clouds - Pink Floyd

Artist: Pink Floyd
Album: Obscured by Clouds
Year: 1972

This album is greatly underrated. It's probably the least mentioned album in Pink Floyd's entire discography. Now this album, back when it was released, was hardly given any promotion. Not to mention it is hugely overshadowed by the immensely popular The Dark Side of the Moon, 1973. The album was recorded quickly for the film La Vallee. I really love this album. It just has a cozy feeling that no other Floyd album really has. The first track, the self-titled Obscured by Clouds, is a good synthesizer piece. I like the steady drumming. When You're In is not remarkable in any way. It is just the same guitar riff repeated for the whole song. I really like the riff but I wish they had done more with it. Burning Bridges is the first song with lyrics. I really like the organ melody. The Gold It's in the... is a great song. I feel like I've heard it before on the radio. I really like the guitar riff at the beginning. The lyrics are very good, and it has a great guitar solo. Wot's... Uh the Deal? is the best song on the album by far. I love the lyrics to this song. I really like David Gilmour's vocals and the great acoustic guitar. Mudmen is the best instrumental on the album. I love Gilmour's guitar work and Wright's keyboards. Childhood's End is another great song. I love the buildup in the beginning and the organ chords before the vocals begin. Free Four has some pretty dark lyrics. These are very deep and dark lyrics about life. I like the guitar solos. The next song, Stay, is pretty good. I like the piano in this song and Richard Wright's vocals. This track is noticeably slower than many of the other songs on the album. Absolutely Curtains is the final song. I love Wright's keyboards and the Mapuga tribe vocals are pretty cool. Overall this is a very good album, despite it being recorded very quickly. I really like the cozy feeling this album has.
